WJCT Public Broadcasting’s mission is to provide programming and services that celebrate human diversity, encourage joyful learning and promote civic participation, all to empower citizens to improve the quality of their lives.
WJCT’s goal is to raise awareness, start dialogue and instigate change, by providing an in-depth exploration of the causes, consequences and possible solution to education issues on the First Coast. The interview segments on First Coast Connect will examine topics including improving student achievement, improving the negative perception of public schools, recruiting and retaining quality teachers, parental involvement and creating an environment to help the community embrace positive change.
Having access to 1.5 million viewers and listeners in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, WJCT has the ability to impact change through interviews and conversation during First Coast Connect and other local radio, television and outreach programs.
WJCT is a vital community presence, partnering with local businesses and organizations to enhance the First Coast community. Our signature education outreach programs include:
Ready To Learn: WJCT currently partners with the businesses community to provide workshops at local elementary schools and daycare centers to teach parents/caregivers how to use PBS programs to teach children and to encourage parental participation.
Share a Story: WJCT’s Share a Story is the centerpiece of the Annual Reading Celebration partnering with the local public school system and public library to help all children to understand and explore the joy of reading.
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive: Celebrating the spirit of Fred Rogers, WJCT partners with local schools and businesses in the annual sweater drive to provide to neighbors in need.
Health Initiatives: WJCT through local and national programming consistently provides access to our viewers and listeners on important health issues that affect their lives. Health Matters, Speaking of Women’s Health conference and monthly lunch and learns.
Being a recipient of the WJCT Mr. Rogers’ Sweater Drive has made a huge impact on the families in our program. Also, having an opportunity to be on WJCT’s First Coast Connect raised awareness and helped our Cardboard City event go over the top with over $14,000 donated.
