Early childhood is widely considered the most vulnerable and crucial stage of our lives. While public education generally starts at the age of five, all areas of development begin from the moment of conception. Over the past quarter century researchers have conducted in depth studies of these essential years and have found in the most basic, general terms that quality early childhood experiences prepare children for later success in life; and inversely, a lack of quality early childhood experiences results in significant life challenges. Alexander Chase encapsulates this research best when he states, “There are few successful adults who were not first successful children.”

The Chartrand Foundation is committed to supporting the fundamental years of conception to age five through a focus on early childhood. Our efforts will engage a three-tiered approach beginning even before a child is conceived through his or her successful transition into elementary school.

Focusing efforts on preconception through kindergarten is necessary but not sufficient.  To sustain the gains children make throughout these years it is imperative to continue the work throughout the child’s life. This is one of the many reasons The Chartrand Foundation has aligned it’s work in Early Childhood to it’s Public Education initiative “Neighborhood Schools of Choice”, and additionally, Jacksonville’s “New Town Success Zone.” This comprehensive and continuous approach ensures that a child will receive the support necessary to reach his or her infinite potential.
